The Temple Trap: Facing a Problem of Aging
Fox News Magazine, April 13, 2013
Do you suffer from "cougar temples?"
That's how one New York City-based plastic surgeon describes the subtle hollows that can develop around women's eyes as the skin loses volume over time.
"A shadow is cast from the eyebrow to the temple region, which gives you an aged, sunken look," says Dr. Stafford Broumand. While these so-called "cougar temples" are a subtle imperfection, correcting them can make a big difference.
"To soften this area a plastic surgeon can inject hyaluronic -based fillers, such as Juvederm or RESTYLANE to restore loss of volume in this area," explains Dr. Michelle Copeland. "It's also possible to use your own fat to more permanently plump this depressed area," she adds.
According to Broumand, the best candidates for the treatment are patients in their 40s or 50s who have depressed or hollowed temples. Broumand says the procedure takes about 30 minutes and patients can expect results to last between nine and 12 months. The cost of the treatment depends on how much filler is needed and can range from under $1,000 to several thousand dollars, Copeland says.
She adds that although the "cougar temple" phenomenon is "relatively infrequent, volume can be restored it can make a subtle but pleasing improvement in a persons facial appearance."
