Dark Circles Under the Eyes

Dark circles under the eyes means you're tired, right? Not exactly. While lack of sleep can contribute to this and a host of other conditions, the skin around the eyes is delicate and thins as we get older. This increased translucency makes the appearance of the blood vessels under the skin appear darker.

Dark circles can even form while you're sleeping, due to swelling. The swollen eyelid casts a shadow, giving the appearance of a dark circle. Some of us have increased skin pigment or melanin around the eyes, creating a shadow that becomes more pronounced as we get older.
