Laser Treatments

Laser and other light-based treatments have transformed cosmetic surgery. Now there are targeted, effective solutions for every skin concern. With proper guidance, a person can resolve almost anything that's plaguing your face or body.
  • Ablative lasers. Ablation means the removal of tissue from the top layer of skin. When the tissue regenerates, it's often firmer and smoother than it was previously, with fewer wrinkles. During the healing process, you might experience an alteration in your melanin, either developing too much or too little. For these reasons, Dr. Copeland is not a proponent of the ablative technique.

  • Fractional resurfacing. The fractionated laser, which avoids removing the entire top layer of skin, is a more recent development. With this procedure, improvement is generally more rapid than with a ablative lasers. Fractionated lasers make tiny pinpricks in the skin. The holes are invisible to the naked eye, but the tissue that's been zapped does flake off. It's a little more aggressive than non-ablative lasers and requires some downtime. Dr. Copeland can guide you through the best option for you.

  • Non-ablative lasers. All lasers use thermal energy, but non-ablative beams bypass the visible tissue and head straight to the dermis (the second layer of skin). This stimulates collagen growth. The surface of the skin remains relatively unaffected by a non-ablative session; there is no flaking or rawness. Typically, four to six monthly non-ablative treatments produce noticeable long-term gains. Repeating a non-ablative procedure creates more collagen and has a cumulative effect.

  • Intense pulsed light (IPL).Although technically not a laser, IPL uses multiple wavelengths of light to achieve its effects. It triggers collagen growth and treats pigmentation issues such as rosacea and age spots. IPL's energy is neither as concentrated nor as powerful as a pulse from a laser. Therefore treatment may take longer, but it's gentler on the skin.

  • Light-emitting diodes (LEDs).LEDs may be the next step in light-based skin therapy. A patient sits in front of a panel of blinking bulbs, sometimes for as little as a minute. The light stimulates collagen production and reduces inflammation. LEDs emit light without high temperatures. Topical LevulanŽ in combination with LED not only makes your skin smoother and healthier; it is the latest advance in treating precancerous actinic skin changes.

Other Laser Treatments:

  • Facial veins. Unsightly facial veins can be treated with precise bursts of laser light, minimizing damage to the skin. The light energy is absorbed by the vein, clogging it, after which it is absorbed back into the body, disappearing from the surface of the skin.

  • Leg veins. Eliminate spider veins and varicose veins with our VersaPulseŽ Laser. Immediately after treatment, the vein will actually appear darker, but shortly thereafter the vein will fade. Laser treatment of leg veins usually requires several visits.

  • Hair removal. If you are tired of ingrown hairs and irritation from waxing and shaving, laser hair removal offers freedom from unwanted body hair. Now popular with both men and women, it is best suited for darker hair but new advances even allow reduction in gray or blonde hair. Commonly performed on the face, upper lip, neck, chest, periareolar, underarms, back, abdomen, bikini line, and legs, it cannot be used on the eyes. Dr. Copeland uses a variety of FDA approved lasers, such as the Light SheerŽ laser, for permanent hair removal for all skin types.

  • Tattoo removal. If you have a tattoo, you are not alone. An estimated 20 million Americans sport tattoos. Laser technology has made great strides in eliminating tattoos. The laser's short pulses of intense light pass harmlessly through the top layers of the skin and are absorbed by the tattoo pigment. This causes the tattoo pigment to fragment into smaller particles that are then removed by the body's immune system. Dr. Copeland array of state-of-the-art lasers helps to remove tattoos of all colors, shapes, and sizes.
